Note: this Jamie’s Italian review is a combination of THREE separate visits to Jamie’s Italian Restaurant.

Jamie’s Italian Review: Entertainer App by HSBC

As far as family-friendly restaurants go, one of my favourite places is Jamie’s Italian. The restaurant is a chain started by British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, who started and owns the Jamie Oliver Restaurant Group.

My family and I usually prefer going to dining establishments that partake in the Love Dining programme – after all, we’ve never been disappointed with any of our personal Love Dining Experiences. However, it is too restrictive to limit ourselves only to Love Dining places.

Here’s where I recommend another amazing dining programme – the Entertainer App’s 1-for-1 mains by HSBC credit card. It has a huge range and number of participating restaurants so it’s great for those who enjoy the variety. I have written a whole post about it on this blog as well:

Entertainer App with HSBC: 1-for-1 dining deals

Entertainer App featuring Jamie’s Italian 1-for-1 Deals

Jamie’s Italian is one of the many participating restaurants, and with the Entertainer App, one can redeem a one-for-one main course – for either dine in or takeaway.

Restaurant Ambience

The restaurant is large and fairly spacious, with both an outdoor patio and indoor seating area. (Though few people would dine outside, given Singapore’s heat…)

Decked out with wooden floors and furniture, the place feels like the old-style rustic Italian restaurant.

Chefs work in an open-kitchen concept, with the cooking and food pickup area at the very end of the restaurant.

Menu

The cuisine of course, is primarily Italian.

According to the restaurant, it “started with what Italian’s are most proud of – fantastic, rustic dishes, using recipes that have been tried tested and loved. Our menu is rooted in authenticity, driven by what you’d find people eating all over Italy.”

Click to enlarge the Menu images below.

In this Jamie’s Italian review, i do notice that – having dined here so many times, the menu does consistently evolve. So items do get periodically removed or added. It’s recommended to check out Jamie’s Italian website for the latest menu and ongoing promotions.

Starters and Salads

First-time visitors to Jamie’s Italian MUST try the Ultimate Garlic Bread.

Ultimate Garlic Bread

Soft buns packed with garlic butter and buffalo mozzarella, slatered with green pesto sauce inside, and sprinkled with rosemary and parmesan cheese atop – it’s easily the best garlic bread I’ve found anywhere in Singapore. Enjoy while it’s hot – the cheese inside is delightfully melted. Every time we order this – it gets gobbled up real quick.

For those aiming for more low-carb options, the salads here are both nutritious and tasty. For example, the Classic Super Food Salad:

Classic Super Food Salad

A vitamin-packed combination of avocado, roasted beets, mixed pulses and grains, sprouting brocolli, pomegranate and spicy seeds with harissa dressing and ricotta cheese. There’s an option to add salmon, prosciutto or grilled chicken, but even without those the salad is complete on its own.

This dish is salad redefined – the creaminess of avocado, crunch of seeds and sourness of avocado – come together wonderfully. Refreshing and flavourful. This is a testimony that salads don’t have to be tasteless or boring.

For those craving for the traditional caesar salad, the Jamie’s Italian Chicken Caesar is all that but even better.

JI (Jamie’s Italian) Chicken Caesar

At it’s heart – the chargrilled chicken, crispy romaine lettuce and chicory gives the salad its foundation. Add in crunchy croutons, garlicky dressing, parmesan cheese, red onion, toasted hazelnuts and chervil for the finishing touches.

Honestly, for this Jamie’s Italian review – I must say that the starters and salads are both carefully created and well-considered. They aren’t merely an afterthought – you can’t help but feel that it’s an essential part of the meal. I highly recommend getting starters or salad to share, especially if you’ve got a big crowd dining out together.

Pasta and Pizza

Pasta and Pizza options are essentials at any Italian dining establishment, and Jamie’s Italian is no exception.

One of the more unique pasta choices here is the Oxtail Lasagne.

Oxtail Lasagne

A herbed oxtail, carefully slow-cooked for 12 hours is prepared with Chianti ragu, and layered with thin home-made pasta sheets. Topped with Bechamel, mozzarella and parmesan – this is the epitome of comforting pasta. Hot with soft meat and a savory combination of the ragu sauce and cheese, this is a good choice for a cold rainy day (or any other day, really).

Love a more traditional bolognese? No problem.

Gennaro’s Tagliatelle Bolognese

Tagliatelle pasta combined with pork and beef slow cooked with red wine, topped with pangrattato and parmesan. This was dangerously addictive – the meat was neither overly chewy nor overbearing, but rather just blends into the dish like it was always meant to be there.
In this Jamie’s Italian review – if you don’t know what to eat, I’d say, go for the pasta. ANY pasta dish. You can’t go wrong with that. There’s just something special about the in-house pasta that leaves a lasting impression that makes you want to come back for more.
And then, there is pizza…

Chilli Freak

Jamie’s Italian does have some unique flavours. For example, Chilli Freak is a mix of fiery chilli freak sauce, mozzarella, rainbow chillies, mint and lemony yoghurt.
A favourite of ours is the Chicken Pizzaiola – the toppings are fresh tomato sauce, olives, capers, roasted sun-dried tomatoes and creamy mozzarella.

Chicken Pizzaiola

The pizzas here have never disappointed. The base is an artisan dough that’s hand-stretched in house. Always light, subtly chewy in overall but slightly crunchy at the edges – it holds the toppings well.
On the side – I have been asked on occassion – is it possible to replicate Italian-restaurant quality pizza at home? My answer is this – even with the best dough and ingredients, without the proper equiptment, it would never be the same. Most Italian restaurants, including La Nonna, Prego, and LaBrezza, have a built-in wood fried or specialty oven to make their pizzas.

Main Dishes

For many seafood restaurants, the classical Fish and Chips is an idiot-proof option when unsure about what to order. At Jamie’s Italian, the Italian Fish and Chips is something special, and I say this as someone who’s tried lots of Fish and Chips all over Singapore. It’s MUCH better than the one I’ve had at the Drunken Poet Irish Bar and The Pelican.

Italian Fish and Chips

Think Beer-battered sustainable sea bass, polenta chips, mushy peas and Italian tartar sauce. The fish batter, crunchy overall, led to a soft and slightly fishy inside that flaked easily with a fork. The polenta chips, so very crunchy, is a delightful alternative to regular chips – these went so well with tartare sauce, my three-year old child couldn’t stop munching on them.

Strictly speaking, Fish and Chips are more British/Western and not exactly Italian, eh?

Likewise, the same can be said for Burgers.

Jamie’s Italian Burger

We all love a good burger. Here, Prime beef patty with smoky bacon, balsamic onions, artisan cheddar, beef tomato and the in-house special sauce are stacked up in a brioche bun. Served with fries, of course. My husband loves the burger here with the patty prepared to a medium rare doneness. The patty is juicy and the overall dish is very filling.

For a more unique seafood dish, my recommendation would be the prawn risotto:

Prawn Risotto

A large dish whereby oozy risotto is cooked with white wine and chilli, pan-fried prawns and courgette, then topped with mint and fried courgette flowers. Sounds exotic on paper, and the dish does carry extra oomph factors, but it also has the loving home-made quality. A highly comforting dish.

Child Menu

One of the reasons why I love Jamie’s Italian is simply how child friendly it is. It reminds me of Brasserie Les Saveurs at St Regis Singapore – where the children’s menu is an adventure worth exploring on its own.

Child Menu

The other side of the Menu – is a colouring paper for kids. Ask the staff, and they will be happy to supply any child with crayons.

All items on the children’s menu come with a Shake-Me salad (little jar of greens and a yogurt dressing) and a choice of drink (glass of milk or fruit juice or fruity water).

Child Menu – Shake Me Salad

If there’s anything I would recommend from the child menu – it’s the Fantastic Fish Stew. Sustainably caught market fish with Jamie’s seven-veg sauce, potato dumplings (gnocchi), peas, basil and lemon – even adults such as myself find this an awesome dish. What more for a child.

Fantastic Fish Stew

The child version of Spaghetti and Meatballs is impressive on its own. Homemade beef meatballs are again served with Jamie’s seven-veg tomato sauce, the restaurant in-house spaghetti and sprinkles of parmesan cheese. These meatballs were seriously juicy – great for any kid’s ease in eating.

Mini Spaghetti and Meatballs

A large dish whereby oozy risotto is cooked with white wine and chilli, pan-fried prawns and courgette, then topped with mint and fried courgette flowers. Sounds exotic on paper, and the dish does carry extra oomph factors, but it also has the loving home-made quality. A highly comforting dish.

Dessert – Molten Cake

Usually, by the time the servers ask if we would like to order dessert, we are so stuffed that we politely decline. But there was this one time we couldn’t resist having something sweet.

Molten Chocolate Praline Pudding

Behold – Molten Chocolate Praline Pudding – a fancy term for Lava Cake really. This is amazing if you’re in the mood for something chocolatey. It’s a warm chocolate cake with a liquid praline centre, served with salted caramel ice cream and pralines.
We loved the salted caramel ice cream; the saltiness of that contrasted the sweet chocolate liquid. I find that molten cakes can vary hugely in terms of how firm / liquidy it is, and this cake tends to be on the more molten and liquid side of things. It could be a hit or miss; the inside is literally a rich melted chocolate sauce – lovely for those who savour it, and gross for those who prefer more cake than sauce.
Overall, food at Jamie’s Italian is idiot-proof, the setting family friendly, and generally we’ve had great experiences there. I can’t speak for the outlet at Vivocity as I’ve always gone to the one at Forum the shopping mall, but at Forum the quality’s pretty consistent. A realiable choice to count on if you want a good Italian or Western meal in town.
