American Express Membership Benefits: end of S$800 Travel Credits

Announcement: there are important changes to the existing (as of late 2022) American Express Membership benefits for The Platinum Charge Card holders.

Currently, card holders receive S$800 travel credits annually, and this S$800 consists of

(i) S$400 air travel credits and
(ii) S$400 hotel lodging credits

This will unfortunately be deactivated by 31 January 2023. Card holders who have not utilised these credits are encouraged to do so, by making online bookings via the Amex online travel website. 

2023 updates to American Express Membership Benefits

From early 2023 onwards (exact date to be confirmed), Platinum Charge Card holders will instead enjoy up to S$1200 cashback in the form of statement credits when they register and spend at participating partners and merchants. These will be spread out across four categories:

• S$400 dining credits: out of which S$200 will be for local and S$200 for overseas participating dining establishments
• S$400 lifestyle credits: minimum spend required (amount to be confirmed) at participating retail and lifestyle partners. 
• S$204 entertainment credits (yes, its really S$204; its not a typo), for monthly news or music streaming services.
• S$200 airline credits: applicable for flight purchases with minimum spend (amount to be confirmed) at Singapore Airlines

I’m not sure how i feel about these yet, as there’s still so much ‘to be confirmed’. However, it feels like the 2023 American Express Membership Benefits would either be (i) more complex (prevoiusly it was either hotel or flight booked via the Amex travel website, and it was a done deal), or (ii) have more stringent fulfilling criteria to meet, given that some of these come with minimum spend requirements. 

Still, i’m refraining from jumping to conclusions for now. For all we know – the benefits could be more attractive; after all, from a pure numbers perspective this is $1200 worth of benefits, which is 50% more than the existing one of S$800.
