This Hoshino Coffee Review post features my family’s dining experience at the Suntec City outlet.

Hoshino Coffee Review: Entertainer App by HSBC

Hoshino Coffee has its origins in Japan. It is a Japanese-Western style cafe known for serving both Japanese dishes and desserts.

Usually, my family and I visit restaurants that are part of the Love Dining programme – so far it’s served us well as we have loved all our personal Love Dining Experiences.

However, the Love Dining programme isn’t the only discounted dining scheme in Singapore. Another good one is the Entertainer App by HSBC credit card. For more information, check out my other post here:

Entertainer App featuring Hoshino Coffee’s 25% off

At Hoshino Coffee, one can redeem a 25% discount off the total bill. With that in mind, my husband, three-year-old child, and myself decided to have some dessert and midday grub there one day.

Menu

In Singapore, there seems to be a slight variation in Menu depending on which outlet you visit. Check out the main menu right here.

Their menu has several components, namely: Drinks (including coffee, tea, matcha variations), Pasta, Omu and Curry Rice, Japanese Style Pasta, Western selections, and Desserts (Souffle pancakes, French Toasts, etc)

Beverages

My husband, being the huge black coffee addict that he is, ordered a large ‘Hikoboshi‘.

Hikoboshi – Full bodied thick and bitter flavour, but a slightly sweet aftertaste. Comes with super cute milk jug on the side

More bitter than acidic, and leaning towards a dark roast, the Japanese consider such coffee as having a more ‘adult’ or ‘mature’ personality. This sort of coffee goes well with milk – and here, it came in the cutest tiniest little cup ever.

The three-year-old daughter and myself opted to share a Strawberry Tea instead.

Strawberry Tea

This was surprisingly good – hot, red, and very fruity- it was a hit with the kid. Visually appealing, the tea came with real berries, including three very large and fresh strawberries and some blueberries. Some may find this tea TOO sweet, even though the sweetness came from fruit and not from a sugary mix. Myself, I opted to reduce the sweetness with squeezed lemon.

Japanese Omu Rice

The Japanese do have their way with creating their own versions of western food, and it shows in the Omu Rice:

Tomato Cream Omu Rice with Shrimp and Mozzarella

Omu rice really means ‘omelette rice’ and it’s a concept whereby fried egg (omelette) is wrapped around Japanese fried rice. The fried rice also tends to be prepared with tomato sauce, among other ingredients.

Notice the reddish rice inside? Pre-fried with Tomato Sauce before being topped with Egg, this dish is popular with kids in Japan

There was an option to do a mini soup add on for $2.50 – and given that it’s lobster bisque, so we thought hey, why not, and eagerly waited for the soup to arrive.

Mini Soup. Emphasis on the word ‘mini’…. the soup was so tiny (left), it was smaller than the glass of water (right)

… And then had a good laugh about how miniscule the little soup cup was. It’s literally the size of a shot glass.

Thankfully, the lobster bisque was actually good. Rich and thick, and blissfully creamy. A real pity that the amount feels more like a sample cup rather than an actual soup bowl.

Double Strawberry Pancake

Of course, what’s a cafe visit without dessert to share? We decided to go for Hoshino Coffee’s souffle style pancakes.

These pancakes are baked rather than pan-fried, and the staff warned that they came with a 20-minute waiting time (That’s okay, eat something else first).

Souffle style pancake with Strawberries and Cream

The pancakes do rise pretty high, but that’s part of its visual appeal.
The batter is a favourite among many. Thick but not overly heavy, the result is a satisying denseness that fills you up in a good way. When paired with the strawberry fruits and cream, it added on a happy freshness. Those strawberries were definitely more sweet than sour – we loved how Hoshino Coffee didn’t skimp on good fruit and it just made such a difference to the dessert qualify.

Chilli Freak

The double pancake version is great for sharing. Though even if I were alone, I doubt I’d get the single pancake version – this was just good enough to make one wish for more.
Overall, an enjoyable afternoon with the family, a lovely meal, and we most certainly will be coming back.
