The Rose Veranda high tea at Shangri-la

The last time I blogged about The Rose Veranda, the place had a high tea buffet. However, at some point it was replaced with a high tea set instead, so here we are.

That day, a friend and I decided to come for the high tea.

Bag of the Day

The Rose Veranda is located on level 2 of Shangri-La Singapore, so we took the stairs from the lobby and made our way up.

Inside, the seating area is both cosy and luxuriously spaced – you never feel that it’s too crowded in here.

The staff, professional and well-groomed, greeted us warmly and showed us to our seats.

Thanks to my dining companion, who waited for me to take this picture first

At the time of visitation, the high tea set was priced at S$98++ per set, which is good for two people (or S$49 per person). It is subject to change however as the menu does rotate. Please note that for special occasions (e.g. Valentine’s Day, Easter etc) prices may increase for that specific season.

Do check out Shangri-La Singapore’s website for their latest information before dining.

First, we were served tea – there is an extensive tea menu, and the servers are rather knowledgeable. Ask for recommendations and they will be happy to explain their menu.

Soon, a pair of three-tiered sets arrived. It was an assortment of dainty finger sandwiches and dainty desserts.

So elegant and pretty

I swear, pictures doesn’t do this set justice.

Three layers of goodness

On the topmost layer was a couple of scones: plain and pandan.

Plain Scone (left) and Pandan Scone (right)

Personal preference here – I loved the scones as they are: soft and warm.

Especially the pandan scone – hints of  a coconuty pandan. Yum.

However, many people, including my friend / dining companion that day, prefer an additional layer of spread. The options here were clotted cream, citrus curd, and marmalade.

The second tier was an assortment of sweets.

From top left, clockwise: Durian Choux, Tropicana Gateau, Bandung Macaron, Framboise Yuzu

Did anyone notice the plates – they are so pretty

All in all – there was a good variation in flavours even among the sweets. Sharp and sour from the Framboise Yuzu (Raspberry and Yuzu mix), fruity from the Tropicana Gateau (pineapple), more muted and neutral from the Bandung Macaron (rose flavoured), and strongly creamy from the Durian Choux (but then again, hey, it is durian).

Durian choux (cream puff). Recommend having this LAST – the durian is very rich.

Finally, there’s the savoury items from the bottom tier.

From Top Left, clockwise: Angus beef cheek rendang cruffin, Seafood otak crust with parmesan, Singapore chilli crab tobiko tart and caviar, Nyona sambal chicken in seaweed coconut roll.

We loved how The Rose Veranda high tea set incorporated elements of local cuisine in it. Everything was divine. Among these four – my favourite was the beef rendang cruffin – soft and well-spiced – within a crumbly cruffin, was absolutely to die for. My friend loved the chilli crab tobiko tart – it’s like chilli crab but elevated into a burst of flavours condensed into a dainty little bite (and of course minus the crab peeling).

And finally, there was The Rose Veranda’s version of a lobster roll.

Lobster bits, marinated in some kind of creamy and spicy sauce, filled a slightly toasted brioche. Topped with ikura (salmon roe) and edible flowers and herb (i think it was rosemary).

Overall, it was a wonderful high tea set, and a lovely way to spend an afternoon. The Rose Veranda does live up to its reputation as one of the best spots for afternoon tea in Singapore, and it’s not hard to see why.

10/10 would totally return again.

Damage Done

Note: For this round of dining of The Rose Veranda High Tea set, I used Shangri-La’s Golden Circle points to offset a part of the dining expenses. All in all, the cost was as follows:

The Rose Verandah High Tea set

– Cost = $98.00 total for 2 pax

– 10% Service Charge: $9.80

– 8% GST: $8.62

(Note: it was late 2023 at the time of dining. From 1st January 2024, GST has been increased to 9% in Singapore).

Total: $116.40

Discount: I used Shangri-La Golden Circle points to offset S$100 from the cost. As such, the final amount I paid was S$116.40 – S$100.00 = S$16.40.
