Mikuni at Fairmont

This is a review of Mikuni at Fairmont hotel Singapore. My husband and I decided to drop by for lunch on a quiet weekday.

And yes, thanks to theΒ American Express Love Dining programme,Β my husband and I dined at 50% off during lunch. My readers know it’s no secret that I’m a fan of these AMEX benefits, and I particularly recommend the Β AMEX Platinum Charge card, for it’s huge range of benefits.Β

AMEX Platinum Charge Card: starting my journey

In the list of participating Love Dining restaurants, Mikuni is the one out of two Japanese dining establishments participating in this programme – the other being Sen of Japan (read my review here!) at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore.

Restaurant Ambience

Inside, the restaurant has mysterious and sophisticated vibes. Dim lighting, dark woody tones, and black furniture gives it a sombre feel – exactly the kind of place you’d go for a quiet, serious, Japanese meal.Β

There is also the option of sitting at the sushi bar.

Food – Set Meals

The husband and I decided to go for the set meals. These come with a starter of salad…

Greens, Tomato, Crunchy Flakes, and Japanese Sesame Dressing

And a flavoured rice cracker.

All set meals come with assorted sashimi, chawanmushi, rice, pickles, miso soup, and dessert of the day.

Grilled Fish of the day…. or rather, Unagi Lunch Set

My husband ordered the grilled fish – and the ‘fish’ of the day turned out to be unagi (eel).

According to the evaluation of my Japanese husband, the unagi’s quality is ‘not bad’. Fresh, soft, and not overly chewy, the piping hot goodness is perfect with Japanese rice.Β

My meal was the assorted Sashimi Lunch Set.Β

Sashimi Lunch Set

Comes with a deep fried tofu, drenched in a sweet broth (dashi), and topped with grilled shitake mushrooms and green peppers.

Agedashi Tofu

And of course… what is a sashimi set meal without raw fish? The highlight was the thick, fresh, and juicy cuts of sashimi – yums. Need I say more?

Set includes: Hotate (scallop), Hamachi (yellow tail), Maguro (tuna), Sake (salmon), Aji (horse mackarel), and Meikajiki (swordfish)

The dessert of the day – mini green tea (matcha) ice cream in a crispy shell. This was kind of bitter, and wasn’t too sweet – which we both loved.Β

Complimentary cake with American Express

Thanks to theΒ Amex Platinum Charge Card,Β I was gifted two vouchers for redemption of either a bottle of wine or a cake (at participating Love Dining restaurants at Fairmont, Swissotel the stamford, or Swissotel Merchant Court). I decided to use one voucher and redeemed a cake. Do note that cake redemptions have to be requested at least two days in advance.

At Mikuni, I was given two options of cake – chocolate truffle, or mango mousse.Β

Chocolate Truffle it is πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

This complimentary cake wasn’t a trivial after-thought, it was a medium-sized 500 grams worth of chocolatey goodness. The mousse was so good – soft, rich, and velvety – totally worth the calories ingested! I have also redeemed the Mango mousse version when I dined at Prego the second time – so check that out in this other post.

Final words and 50% off with Love Dining

With set meal prices starting from $80, there is no question that the food here is pricey. Set meals at other regular Japanese restaurants in Singapore tend to hover around $30 to $40, and that’s about half the price. The quality here is good and definitely better than most Japanese restaurants, and the ambience and service here were both fantastic. But whether it’s really twice as good to justify the cost at twice the price… it’s really to each his own at this point.

However, thanks to American Express – as an holder of both the American Express Platinum Reserve Card and Amex Platinum Charge Card, under theΒ Love Dining Benefits, I received a 50% discount on dining at Mikuni at Fairmont.

  • 1 Sashimi Set Lunch – $90.00
  • 1 Grilled Fish Set (Unagi) – $90.00
  • 1 Genmai Cha (hot) – $5.00
  • 1 Sencha (cold) – $5.00

– Original Total Bill: $190.00

– AMEX dining discount: minus $95.00

– Subtotal: $95.00

– 7% GST: $7.32

– 10% Service Charge: $9.50

– Total cost: $111.82
