S$1204 statement credits to replace S$800 Travel Credits

In late 2022, American Express announced that for Platinum Charge Card holders, the annual S$800 travel credit benefit (comprised of S$400 lodging credits and S$400 travel credits respectively) would cease by 31st January 2023.

Card holderswere also encouraged to use those credits before 31st January 2023 as well.

Now, those S$800 credits have been confirmed to be replaced by S$1204 worth of statement credits, spread out across four categories:

  • S$400 dining credits: to be comprised of S$200 local and S$200 for overseas participating dining establishments.
  • S$400 lifestyle credits: for Spa treatments and Alcohol.
  • S$204 entertainment credits (yes, its really S$204; its not a typo), for monthly news or music streaming services.
  • S$200 airline credits: applicable for flight purchases with Singapore Airlines and Scoot.

American Express has updated these benefits on their website as well.

How to use statement credits

Do note that usage of these benefits is not automatic. To utilise these credits, card holders MUST log into their account, and save these offers to their card.

This can be done via login through the Amex website or the Amex app.

Save each offer to card

After that, an eligible purchase has to be made at the participating partner. Statement credits would be automatically credited to the account within 30 days from qualifying spend (but it may take longer).

Overall thoughts

Honestly, I was slightly disappointed with the change. The previous benefits were definitely easier to use – S$400 for flights and S$400 for hotel lodging was nearly a no-brainer.

While the benefits appear to be more in terms of absolute numbers (S$1204 statement credits as opposed to S$800 previously), it is harder to use them across all four categories. Personally, I forsee myself using the dining, airline, and entertainment credits, but the spa benefits remain questionable – especially the requirement to spend S$600 in one shot (before getting S$400 in statement credits) – that seems a tad bit much to swallow.

Having said that, how one interprets the change to S$1204 statement credits, is highly dependent on one’s lifestyle. I imagine that spa-lovers would rejoice at the spa benefits, so this is truly a case of to each his own.
