Where do you go if you want a good, hearty lunch, enjoy American Express Love Dining benefits, and have it all in a somewhat deserted place, far away from the usual crowds that Singapore is known for?

Answer: You go to W hotel, all the way at the end at Sentosa Cove.

On two separate occasions, the husband and I went to The Kitchen Table for lunch to try out their a la carte menu. Located within the hotel premises at W Singapore Sentosa Cove, at the far end of Sentosa island, this place is almost gauranteed to be crowd-free during the weekday lunch hour (if you’re willing to drive out all the way, that is).

The last time we made an effort to come to W hotel was when we visited SKIRT – a grilled steak kind of dining establishment also within W hotel that also offered Amex Love Dining benefits.

It all seemed so long ago, so coming back to W hotel definitely felt nostalgic.

While waiting to order, complimentary foccacia bread alongside butter and an olive oil / vinegar mix was brought to us.

American Express Love Dining

Of course, what is dining at high-end restaurants or hotels without the American Express Love Dining programme. –  It allows diners to enjoy 50% off at participating establishments when two adults dine in.

I absolutely swear by and cannot live without the Platinum Charge card (I’ve written about the list of benefits here), thanks to a whole host of other perks that it offers.

For a place like The Kitchen Table in W hotel, getting 50% off the food bill is super worth it. I cannot recommed Love Dining enough – I’ve used it so many times that I’ve literally lost count.

Buns and More: Burgers and Sandwiches

There is a category of food that I consider “idiot-proof” – i.e. things that really cannot go wrong. Usually, stuff like Fish and Chips or Club Sandwiches fall into this category.

But the Club Sandwich here is beyond idiot-proof on a whole new level.

Stuffed with grilled chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, fried egg, and chicken bacon – this is usually served in a ciabatta bun. However, on the day I dined-in, the server apologetically said that they were out of ciabatta and I was offered a sourdough version instead.

This was pretty well made: the bread was toasted to perfection and not soggy at all. The grilled chicken came out all tender AND most importantly: the ingredients were magically well-arranged.

Usually, for club sandwiches, everything falls out messily the moment one starts eating it – but in my case, thanks to the toothpicks, most of the sandwich remained intact at least 75% of the time (Disclaimer: personally, HUGE bites were taken. Big-mouth style. Haha).

There is also a very popular beef burger.

Filled with bacon jam, cheese, caramelized onions, and vegetables – this was a good burger.

Cross Section

A winner for both the burger and sandwich is the FRIES. Thick cut, hot, mildly crispy – just the way awesome fries should be. 100% worth the calories.

Thick Fat Fries. Best dipped in mayonnaise and chilli sauce.

Pizza, Pasta, Mains

Pizza is always a good idea: great for sharing, and the leftovers are easy to carry home for a good snack the next day.

Topped with garlic puree, goat cheese, mixed mushrooms, red onions, and arugula – the mild sweet-sharpness of red onion wasn’t overpowering and blended well with an even sharper goat cheese – generally all this lifted the mushrooms’ taste and texture. A little exotic as far as mushrooms pizza goes, but could be a deal breaker if one hates onions (i know that many do).

The Seafood Pizza is also a popular choice. This one is topped with squid, claims, octopus, shrimp, tomato sauce and fennel.

The Kitchen Table was pretty generous with the seafood toppings – this wasn’t one of those pizzas that simply sprinkled a few timy pieces of shrimp: the seafood was EVERYWHERE. Huge one for the win.

Or, if one wants an attempt to be healthier, try the Pan-Seared Barramudi.

The combination here isn’t immediately intuitive at first glance: Barramundi served with a rich olive-caper tomato sauce (and mashed potatoes and a green salad). But a bite and wow – the olive and capers really draw out (or create?) flavours from the plainer fish.

And then, there was the Pumpkin and Cheese Ravioli.

Can this get any richer? A ravioli stuffed with pumpkin and cheese on the inside, and marinated in butternut squash and ricotta-sage buttercream on the outside. Super nutty and smooth. Enjoyable as hell.

Dessert

Because my husband is crazy about Tiramisu, this was definitely a must-try for him.

On first glance, it doesn’t look like much – just a very circular chocolate slice resting on a bed of cream.

But dig deeper and the ingredients appear: though not obvious, the taste of salted caramel, chocolate ganache chantilly mascarpone, ladyfingers sponge coffee, and 70% valhona chocolate all come to life.

Never judge a book by its cover.
