Paulaner Brauhaus review

This post features my Paulaner Brauhaus review – visited by my husband, three-year old daughter, and myself.

Located in Millenia walk, Paulaner Brauhaus has been producing its own beer on-site for at least 20 years.

And of course, the American Express Love Dining programme gave us up to 50% off when we dined in.

While selected American Express credit cards come with restaurant discounts and love dining privileges, my most recommended is the Platinum Charge card, – it’s lifestyle benefits are practically unrivalled.

Restaurant Interior

The premises at Millenia walk is a three-storey building, with the ground floor having both indoor and outdoor seating areas.

Paulaner Brauhaus, ground floor

In the middle of the ground floor – it hosts a large brewing tank, where the beer is made on-site. Periodically, a brewmaster comes to check on the machine and samples the produce.

This entire set up has its roots from the original Paulaner Brauhaus in Munich. According to the its own website,

“Our resident brewmaster chooses only the best ingredients such as hops from the Hallertau right outside of Munich and malt from Upper Franconia produced by an old-established family enterprise which was founded in 1879.”

Upstairs, there are additional seating areas. While the ground floor brewery holds about 100 guests, Level 2 easily holds up to 180 people.

Paulaner Brauhaus, Level 2

Also at Level 2: A towering sky-blue candy striped Maibaum (Maypole) – a 16th century architectural antique – stretches all the way to Level 3.

On level 3 – there is a walkway with seats along the sides that can accomodate 60 to 80 more people, and it offers a lovely view of the level below.

View from Level 3

Images of Bavaria (South Germany) decorate the walls along the stairways.

Overall, the entire restaurant shows that it’s done up and all ready for a party.

Menu and 1-for-1 Beers

The cuisine here features traditional Bavarian dishes, with food served on wooden slabs, large plates and pans for communal sharing, and the usual beer garden fare.

Check out the menu online right here

In this Paulaner Brauhaus review, I must emphasize – to qualify for discounts by Love Dining benefits – each adult has to order at least one qualifying Main Course from the a la carte menu. Love Dining qualifying items are dishes from the ‘Salad’, ‘Classics’, ‘Sausages’, ‘Schnitzel’, ‘Vegetarian’ or one of their platters. Do note that a platter is considered ONE item (even if it’s meant for sharing).

Once this criteria (one qualifying item per adult) is fulfilled, the entire food bill (but not drinks) will be given Love Dining benefits.

In addition to Love Dining benefits, Paulaner Brauhaus also does an all day 1-for-1 beer promotion (evenday from opening till closing, except for Fridays when it runs until 7pm). At the time of writing, the restaurant has mentioned that the promotion will be ongoing for an indefinite amount of time.

Special deal shoutout: Usually, once a diner opts for Love Dining benefits, a restaurant doesn’t allow it to be combined with other promotions. However at Paulaner Brauhaus, they allowed us to have BOTH – this means that my husband I could enjoy both the Love Dining discounts (50% for 2 adults!) and get two beers for the price of one on top of that!

Paulaner Brauhaus review: Thumbs-up for the good variety of beers freshly brewed on-site. Naturally, husband loved the beer menu 🙂

I ordered the Weissbier, which has a lighter flavour but the malt’s flavour was still obvious.

And the husband ordered the Festbier – which the staff refers to as the ‘Christmas Beer’. This is a seasonal item. With a stronger taste but still nicely mild and smooth, the staff recommended this be paired with more heavy meat or Oktoberfest type dishes.

Bavarian Dishes

While enjoying the cool, fresh beer, the dishes arrived rather quickly.

Served in large round pans – typical of those I’ve actually seen in Southern Germany

First up was the Paulaner Signature Sausage Pan. It comes with two grilled Nurnberger sausages: one Bavarian white Bratwurst sausage, and the Paulaner signature sausages. Served with sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, and the in-house dark beer sauce.

Paulaner Signature Sausage Pan

If sausage isn’t your thing, a great alternative would be – meat patties – also known as Fleischpflanzerl.

Here, juicy, pan-fried pork and beef patties are served in the same Paulaner dark beer sauce, with sides of mashed potatoes and crispy onion rings.

Fleischpflanzerl

Some may wonder if the meat would be too tough in the meatball form, but we found it tender enough. The crispy onions on top of the mashed potatoes really add an extra oomph to everything else.

Overall, both these dishes were highly comforting. The kind of thing you’d have after a long hard day at work, or on a rainy day when you want something hearty.

Flavourful meatball, with even more flavourful dark beer sauce. Yums.

What’s a German restaurant without Schnitzel? For the records, a Schnitzel is a cut of meat that’s pounded till thin, dipped in breadcrumbs, and either deep fried or shallow-fried after.

Pork Schnitzel

This Paulaner Brauhaus review gets a huge edge simply because there are FOUR kinds of schnitzel, which is a cut above other German places (If i’m not wrong, Brozeit has ONE schnitzel on its menu, and likewise for Frieda at the Capitol Kempinski). For this visit, we decided to go for the Pork Schnitzel: a thinly flattened pork escalope is breaded and fried golden brown with butter, and served with lemon and a huge mountain of fries.

So sinful, so good. Totally worth the calories

My favourite item of the day turned out to be dessert. Behold the Apfel Kiacherl. Apple rings coated in sweet pastry made with Paulaner wheat beer, deep fried, sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon, served with Vanilla ice-cream and red berries

Apfel Kiacherl

The dish, taste-wise, somewhat resembles apple crumble but it is more crispy and less heavy. The sweet, sweet apples and cinnamon were divine with ice cream smoothed over. More sugar needed? Fret not, add Vanilla Sauce.

Apples – I guess this counts as a serving of fruit, right?

It’s a sinful ending to an already sinful meal, but patrons would leave feeling satisfied and comforted by the whole experience. Health factor aside, I would otherwise recommend this place for its hearthy food.

Paulaner Brauhaus review overall, AMEX love dining (50% off)

The feel of Paulaner Brauhaus is different from the German food experience I’ve had at Frieda (Capitol Kempinski hotel). While Frieda has more Northern German varieties and the set up feels more high-class (being in a hotel and all), the one here is more Bavarian and has a more home-made feel to it.

The service was friendly; the staff were knowledgeable and knew how to recommend beers for the dishes; definitely a plus point for a bar such as this.

The only downside is that this place CAN get crowded. When we visited, the restaurant was full on the ground floor – and this was despite making reservations (2nd floor was closed at the time of visitation). The staff mentioned that it can get VERY PACKED on Friday evenings and weekends, which isn’t surprising given the quality of food and the presence of home-made beer.

As an holder of the American Express Platinum Charge Card, for this Paulaner Brauhaus review, under the Love Dining Benefits – minimum order of two qualifying mains for two adults (kid ate for free) – I received the following dining discounts:

  • 1-for-1 Beer: $17.50 for two beers (Yes, I could combine this with AMEX love dining!)
  • Fleischpflanzerl – $17.90
  • Sausage Pan – $26.90
  • Pork Schnitzel – $25.90
  • Apfel Kiacherl – $15.90

– Total original charge: $103.10

– AMEX LOVE DINING minus 50% off = minus $42.80 (food only)

– Sub Total: $66.33

– 7% GST: $4.64

– 10% Service Charge: $6.03

– Total cost: $70.97 for 2 adults and 1 child
