Barossa Steak and Grill

Barossa Steak and Grill is located in the Vivocity mall by Harbourfront MRT.

Entrance

The restaurant is inspired by Australian grilled meats. According to its’ website,

“Barossa Steak and Grill VivoCity boasts a wide selection of charcoal-grilled meat with deep smokiness. Serving only the highest quality and carefully sourced meats from Australian Farms, with an emphasis on dry-aged Australian beef and other Josper grilled dishes.” – Barossa’s Steak and Grill website.

Seating Area

That day, the husband and I brought kid number 2 (a two-year old) here to dine.

And my readers will know that I came here because of the American Express Love Dining benefits.

American Express: Love Dining

With the American Express Platinum Charge card, card holders are entitled to Love Dining benefits – and this means dining at up to 50% off at participating hotel dining establishments and other reputable restaurants.

Barossa Steak and Grill is part of the Love Dining restaurants, so when my husband and myself can dine at 50% off (our very small child doesn’t count in the calculation of love dining benefits in this case), it was a deal that we could not pass up.

Starters

While waiting, the server brought us some water.

Note: we were charged $2.00 for still water. EACH.

We had ordered one appetizer to share: Barossa Crab Cakes.

Barossa Crab Cakes

Here, Japanese Red Crab is made into a patty and deep fried, served with cayenne garlic aioli, pico de gallo, and arugula. Slightly crispy on the outside and bursting with seafood-y goodness on the inside, our two-year old loved this so much and kept asking for more.

Main Dishes

Barossa Bar and Grill is definitely a place for meat lovers. There are many good options, and the Smoked Apple Wood St Louis Pork is one of them.

The pork ribs here carry a beautiful shoyu marmite glaze, and went wonderfully with some miso-flavoured peppers and potatoes.

A balanced veggie to meat ratio, yes?

Don’t be fooled by appearances: the vegetables look like a tiny portion in pictures but the highlight of this dish is the meat. It is very rich and nearly fall-off-the-bone soft, and VERY filling.

Next up is something from The Josper Grill: Shio Koji Prime Rib of Pork.

The Josper Grill fun fact: this grill has the best features of a combined grill and oven. Imagine the smoky flavours of grilled meats combined with the oven’s ability to maintain a fixed temperature.

Served with Tarragon Bearnaise sauce

Here, items from the Josper grill comes with one choice of sauce: Double Whiskey Mustard, Chimichurri, Tarragon Bearnaise, Black Pepper Butter Sauce, Kombu Truffle Butter, Bordelaise Red Wine.

I went with the Tarragon Bearnaise. Absolutely divine with the roasted garlic and well-roasted meat. The pork was unexpectedly tender and flavourful – the roasted shio (salt) and Koji miso added just the right amount of savoury-salty feels.

This was very filling

The husband’s favourite was the Wagyu Beef Burger. This was a lovely combination of a 350 Days grain-fed beef patty, brioche bun, manchego cheese, balsamic onion marmalade, house burger sauce, lettuce and tomato, and served alongside a house salad.

The beef was divine – you really taste how extremly well-grilled the patty is. Smoky-infused and tender without being overcooked, juices oozed in every bite.

Sides: Potatoes galore

You know you’re in for a treat when the side dishes have potatoes in them. Lol.

Patatas Asada (left) and straight cut fries (right)

Most of the dishes at Barossa Steak and Grill come with a smaller side (e.g. a salad), so if one desires a heavier, more substantial side dish, a separate order is needed.

My husband ordered the Patatas Asada: a lovely grill of Chat Potato, Garlic, and Kelp Noisette butter. These were fantastic – both of us actually preferred this over the fries.

Straight cut fries

The fries were well-fried and crispy – but in the end they are just some good old ordinary fries. The two-year-old strongly preferred the fries over anything else, however. 😛

Overall thoughts

The meats were definitely top notch: grilled in the best way possible, well-flavoured, tender, and very indulgent.

The josper grill does live up to its name, and Barossa Steak and Grill has done a great job with the meats.

Price wise, without the American Express discount, it’ll definitely be on the steeper end – especially when you consider that fries / potatoes have to be ordered separately, and still water is chargeable at $2 per person (refillable, but still this small charge becomes almost a downer in the grand scheme of things).

We had some leftovers and took them home – and despite eating the leftovers the next day, the meats still help up very well.

Would recommend Barossa Bar and Grill for meat lovers who are looking to splurge on something special.

American Express discount

For this review of Barossa Steak and Grill, I paid the bill with the  Amex Platinum charge card. As such, we dined with a 50% discount off all food itesm. Diners included the husband and myself (two adults) along with one small child (not technically counted as a human for love dining benefits)
